Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Value for Money Unit.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

162 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the purpose of the value for money unit in his Department; the projects or reports which they have undertaken; the reports or recommendations which they have made; the action, if any, which has been taken as a result of these reports; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13004/95]

The Value for Money Unit of the Local Government Audit Service undertakes reviews of selected local authority operations with a view to improving economy, efficiency and effectiveness. To date, seven reports have been completed; these have examined purchasing, advertising, insurances, parking charges, photocopying costs, machinery yards and energy efficiency in local authority buildings. Reviews in relation to differential rents, property management, public lighting and stores are currently under way.

Completed reports are issued to all local authorities for consideration and appropriate action. Implementation is monitored at the annual audit of individual local authority accounts.
