Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Knocklyon (Dublin) School Requirements.

Tom Kitt

Ceist:

214 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Education her current proposals, if any, regarding the need for a post-primary school for the Knocklyon area, Dublin 16, in the light of any additional statistical data that has been made available to her Department. [13057/95]

The Deputy will be aware that in early 1994 I commissioned a survey by the Service Industries Research Centre of UCD of the post-primary needs of the Knocklyon area of Dublin 16.

The report of this independent assessment (popularly known as the Bannon report on Knocklyon) concluded that a new post-primary school located in Knocklyon was not warranted. I accepted the recommendations of the independent consultant and decided not to proceed with the construction of a post-primary school for that area.

Arising from my decision to accept Dr. Bannon's recommendations, I met with a deputation from the Knocklyon Post-Primary Committee on 29 March last. The points raised by the Committee on that occasion were not such as would lead to a reversal of that decision. Also, data received from the post-primary committee subsequent to the meeting did not contain any new arguments or information which would call for the decision to be reviewed.

Accordingly, it is my intention not to provide a post-primary school in the Knocklyon area.
