Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Coroners Act.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

245 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice her views on the implications for section 24 of the Coroners Act, 1962, which allows power to order a second inquest in certain circumstances, in view of a recent High Court case (details supplied) which decided that no such power existed; if she intends to amend the law to allow for second inquests where the deceased's family have grounds for seeking such a decision; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13082/95]

I am aware of the recent High Court proceedings which considered the operation of the provisions of section 24 of the Coroners Act, 1962 in a particular case. I understand that an appeal to the Supreme Court has been lodged by the Attorney General in the matter and pending the outcome of these proceedings it would be inappropriate for me, as Minister for Justice, to comment in any way.
