Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Poultry Industry Assistance.

James Leonard

Ceist:

344 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the steps, if any, he proposes to take to assist the poultry industry in combating the increasing volume of imports. [12844/95]

The importation of poultry to Ireland from other member states of the European Union is permitted provided the goods comply with specified health standards and the requirements of the relevant EU Directives.

At present, imports from third countries are not permitted. However, the EU Commission have prepared a list of 16 third countries and models of animal health certificates for the importation of fresh poultrymeat into the EU. It is proposed that the importation of fresh poultrymeat into the EU from these countries will be permitted from 2 February 1996.
In January of this year I launched a new Development Strategy for the Poultry Processing Sector. This Strategy recognises the major challenges facing the Irish industry from increased imports in the context of the liberalisation of markets.
The Strategy provides a framework for the industry to reduce its cost base, further improve quality, and develop skills, facilities, new products and niche export markets. Targets have been set for output, domestic market share and export activity up to 1999. Estimated capital investment of £34 million, including substantial State and FEOGA financial assistance, will be provided in this five year period.
In order to ensure the successful implementation of the development strategy for the poultry industry. I have set up a Poultrymeat Forum. The organisations represented on the Forum are drawn from all areas of the industry, Teagasc, Forbairt and my own Department.
