Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will give details in tabular form of the total expenditure on Bovine TB by his Department over the last five years and the subtotals of that expenditure under the headings of compensation to farmers, administrative costs, research into Bovine TB, payments to vets and expenditure on drugs; if this information is not available in tabular form, if he will give details, in as detailed a manner as possible, of the expenditure on the eradication of Bovine TB; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total allocation by his Department for expenditure in 1995 on research into Bovine TB; the total allocation or the estimate thereof for Bovine TB in general; the proportion allocated for research in the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose taking Questions Nos. 381 and 382 together.

Because of accounting mechanisms it is not possible to readily separate the exact expenditure on the bovine TB and brucellosis eradication schemes. The bulk of brucellosis testing is carried out in conjunction with TB testing and expenditure on this scheme is estimated at some one sixth of the combined annual expenditure.

Expenditure on the bovine TB and brucellosis eradication schemes for each of the last five years and the allocation for the current year is set out as follows. The proposed expenditure on research in 1995 is £0.5 million.
