Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - North-South Interconnector.

Bertie Ahern

Ceist:

404 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if the main North-South interconnector is functioning again; and if so, the levels of exchange of electricity which are anticipated. [13286/95]

The North-South electricity interconnector between Louth and Armagh was energised in April this year. The capacity of the interconnector is 300MW which will allow the transfer of approximately 2,600 million units per annum.

Exchanges of power have been occuring since early September on a standby basis. Formal contracts for the operation of the interconnector are under negotiation between ESB and Northern Ireland Electricity and are expected to be concluded later this year.
