Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Meeting with Unionist Leader.

Ray Burke

Ceist:

33 Mr. R. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs when he intends to meet the new Unionist Leader, Mr. Trimble. [13211/95]

On the night of Mr. Trimble's election as leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, I issued a statement congratulating him on his victory and expressing the hope that he would find it possible to take up at an early date the invitation extended to his predecessor to meet representatives of the Government.

I am pleased to say that Mr. Trimble was quick to respond positively to the Government's invitation and has signalled his willingness to come to Dublin in the near future. You will also be aware that he has already met the Minister for Social Welfare in Belfast.

For my part, I look forward to meeting Mr. Trimble at the earliest opportunity which can be agreed following my return from the UN General Assembly in New York.
