Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin and Monaghan Car Bombings.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

115 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the current position regarding the Garda investigations into the 1974 car bombings in Dublin and Monaghan; the additional new information that has been obtained in recent years; the likely developments from these investigations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13741/95]

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 16 and 34 on 8 June 1995 and my detailed public statement of 17 May 1995 on the investigation into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, a copy of which is in the Oireachtas Library.

The current position is that the Garda examination of the contents of the RTE "Prime Time" broadcast of 18 May 1995, which addressed, among other issues, the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, is still ongoing. I will communicate with the Deputy and, in accordance with the undertaking which I gave on 8 June, with representatives of the families of the victims of the bombings and other Members of this House, as soon as I receive the Garda authorities report in this matter. I must add, however, that the indications which I have received from the Garda authorities, to date, do not suggest that new evidence which could provide the basis for a criminal prosecution, has been uncovered.
