Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Questioning.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

116 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the findings of the pilot scheme of audio/video recording of Garda questioning of suspects; the likely timescale for implementing a widening of the use of this method; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13754/95]

A committee was appointed in March 1993 to make recommendations for a pilot scheme in relation to the audio-video recording of interviews with suspects in Garda stations and to make arrangements for such a scheme. It reported to my predecessor in March 1994, following an examination of the technical and operational issues involved and having examined the position in other countries.

The committee's recommendations in relation to establishing a pilot scheme were accepted and they subsequently arranged for the pilot scheme to be set up in four Garda stations. It has been operational since earlier this year. The pilot scheme would be expected to run for two years or so.
