Vol. 456 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prison Statistics.

Brian Cowen

Ceist:

8 Mr. Cowen asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons held in prisons or places of detention in the State on 1 September 1995. [13759/95]

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

125 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the number of prisoners currently held in each of our prisons. [12872/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 8 and 125 together. The number of prisoners in custody on Friday, 1 September 1995 in each of the prisons and places of detention was as follows:

Mountjoy Prison (Male)

610

Mountjoy Prison (Female)

33

Limerick Prison (Male)

112

Limerick Prison (Female)

5

Cork Prison

219

Arbour Hill Prison

129

Portlaoise Prison

147

Shelton Abbey

49

Training Unit

86

Loughan House

66

Fort Mitchel

95

St. Patrick's Institution

116

Shanganagh Castle

48

Wheatfield Place of Detention

317

Total

2,032

Would the Minister accept that Mountjoy prison is now totally overcrowded and that it will be extremely difficult to provide adequate drug treatment units in the prison?

This is a statistical question and does not make provision for such elaboration.

Is it still the Government's intention to provide additional accommodation at Mountjoy prison in view of the chronic overcrowding there?

We should not go into policy matters under this question.

I can confirm for the Deputy that Mountjoy prison is overcrowded as the statistics indicate.
