Vol. 456 No. 3

Written Answers. - Drugs Convictions.

Dan Wallace

Ceist:

24 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons who were convicted on indictment of possession of controlled drugs for the purpose of sale or supply contrary to section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977 to 1984, in the first six months of 1995. [13773/95]

Official figures for 1995 are not readily available. However, provisional figures for 1994 show that there were ten convictions for indictable offences under section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Acts. Criminal proceedings for indictable offences under the Misuse of Drugs Acts were commenced in 74 cases in 1994.

It should be borne in mind that most of the proceedings instituted under the Misuse of Drugs Acts are non-indictable. In this regard, non-indictable proceedings were taken in 4,498 cases under the Misuse of Drugs Acts in 1994. It is further noted that convictions were obtained in 3,064 cases during the year. The total number of persons charged with possession and/or supply of controlled drugs in 1994 was 4,053.
