Vol. 456 No. 8

Written Answers. - Mobile Phone Transmission Masts.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

44 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Health his views on the additional radiation being caused by the large number of mobile phone transmission masts being erected by ESAT Telecom around Dublin city, in view of the health concerns expressed by many citizens; and the representations, if any, he has made to the planning authorities. [14778/95]

Limerick East): Telecommunications companies here are licensed by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications who have advised that companies use low power transmitters and operate within safety limits recommended by the International Radiation Protection Association. Electro-magnetic radiation emissions measured here were well within the recommended limits. Research into electro-magnetic radiation is monitored on an on-going basis by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications. My Department maintains liaison with that Department in relation to the health aspects of electro-magnetic radiation. The general body of evidence to date has not conclusively established a casual relationship between this form of radiation and ill health. Approval for erection of transmitter masts is the responsibility of the relevant local planning authorities and I have not made any representations to them on this matter.
