Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority House Purchases.

Séamus Hughes

Ceist:

110 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details on a local authority basis of the total number of houses purchased, broken down between new and secondhand houses, since commencement of the policy on an annual basis having regard to the main thrust of the arrangements set out in circular letter 17/84. [15012/95]

Details of the number of private houses purchased by individual local authorities in the years 1990-94 are set out in the following table. The information available does not distinguish between new and secondhand houses. Details for the years prior to 1990 are not readily available but relatively few houses were purchased in those years.

Ceist:

111 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has received from any of the local authorities in County Mayo to purchase private houses in accordance with circular no. 17/84; the date or dates such proposals were submitted; and if he will give full details of the approvals sought from his Department. [15013/95]

Local authorities were notified by circular letter N 7/92 of amended procedures under which the Department's prior approval to the acquisition of houses is not required where: (a) the cost of acquisition can be met from a local authority's capital allocation; and (b) the acquisition represents a cost effective and economical means by which the authority can meet the housing needs of a person who has been included in the last needs assessment made by the authority, or who has been accepted for inclusion in the next assessment.

In relation to the 1995 local authority housing programme, Ballina and Castlebar Urban District Councils each included the acquisition of six houses in their programmes. Ballina UDC furnished details on 4 September last in respect of the acquisition of five houses at a total cost of £219,680. Details of 1995 acquisitions by Castlebar UDC have not yet been received in the Department.
