Vol. 457 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Colm M. Hilliard

Ceist:

63 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there is a grave danger that wheelchair-bound pupils may have to miss school in view of the fact that her Department and Bus Éireann do not provide accessible transport for them to attend Saint Ultan's special school, Navan, County Meath; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15684/95]

I am aware of the difficulties to which the Deputy refers.

There are two wheelchair-bound pupils enrolled in St. Ultan's Special School. I understand that suitable transport arrangements have now been made for one of these children. My Department is currently investigating possible arrangements to meet the needs of the second pupil.

I can assure the Deputy that my Department places a high priority on ensuring that all special needs children, including those in wheelchairs, are facilitated to the maximum extent possible in pursuing their education.
