Vol. 457 No. 5

Written Answers. - Anti-Drugs Committee Funding.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

64 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the outcome, if any, to the meeting between a representative of her Department (details supplied) and members of the Inter Agency Drugs Committee from Dublin north inner city held on 23 August 1995; and her response to the request for part-funding of the group by her Department. [15685/95]

In July 1995 the Government approved proposals from the Minister for Justice for a series of legislative, financial, operational and organisational measures designed to combat the smuggling of drugs into the country. The Government recognised that multi-faceted actions are required, and asked the Minister for Health, in consultation with the Minister for Education and other relevant Ministers, to bring a report to Government before the end of 1995.

Among the key measures proposed by the Government is the reconstitution of a high level co-ordinating committee under the chairmanship of a Minister of State to devise measures to reduce the demand for, and the supply of drugs. The committee will have representatives from the Department of Justice, Defence, Health, Education, Foreign Affairs, the Revenue Commissioners and other relevant agencies.

The Inter Agency Drugs Committee proposal is under consideration in this context at present. My Department will be in contact with the committee shortly about the matter.
