Vol. 457 No. 5

Written Answers. - Travel Costs.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

83 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give a detailed breakdown of the £4,435 travel and subsistence expenses incurred by him within the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15743/95]

My reply to the Deputy, on Thursday, 19 October 1995, Question No. 99, indicated that I had incurred travel and subsistence expenses amounting to £4,435 in relation to travel within the State. This amount includes a sum of £4,170 which is charged to the travel and subsistence subhead in respect of an unvouched expense allowance payable monthly under the provisions of Oireachtas (Allowances to Members) and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (Amendment) Act, 1992 (Allowances) (No.2) Regulations, 1992 (S.I.No. 397 of 1992) to cover expenses incurred both as a member of the Oireachtas and as a Minister.

A detailed breakdown of the balance of £265 is given in the following table. It should be noted, however, that this table does not give the full extent of my official travel within the State. I have made many other trips, both within the Dublin region and throughout the country, for which expenses have not been claimed. As has been pointed out in my reply on Thursday 19 October 1995, information in relation to the destinations, dates, duration and purposes of such trips is not readily available and its compilation would involve a disproportionate amount of time and work.

Ceist:

84 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Social Welfare the costs which have been paid out for flights, hotel reservations and other costs incurred to date by his Department in respect of proposed participants at meetings and conferences, where such participants did not avail of the arranged bookings; if he will give a breakdown in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15781/95]

My Department has incurred no costs in respect of persons who have cancelled attendance at conferences or meetings.
