Vol. 457 No. 6

Written Answers. - Film Production.

Kathleen Lynch

Ceist:

45 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the progress, if any, made with regard to the development of a screen commission; the proposals, if any, he has for the marketing of Ireland as a location for film-making; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15764/95]

STATCOM — the committee of senior officials of the State bodies responsible for the broad development of the film and television production industry — is examining how best the objective of establishing a screen commission can be realised on a cost-effective basis. I await their advice in the matter.

In the meantime, I am happy to assure the Deputy that my Department and Bord Scannán na hÉireann are dealing very effectively with inquiries concerning Ireland as a location for film production. Bord Scannán na hÉireann will launch a report on "Tax Advantages for Film and Television Production in Ireland" next month, which will be available in all State and semi-State offices abroad by early next year as a user-friendly summary of the incentives available in Ireland for film production. Bord Scannán na hÉireann is also represented at all the major markets and festivals abroad and, with the active support of An Bord Tráchtála, provides briefing and information on all aspects of film production in Ireland. The financial assistance provided by An Bord Tráchtála for Irish producers to attend these markets abroad enables them to establish contacts at first hand in circumstances in which, given the range of incentives I have placed at their disposal, Irish producers now make attractive co-production partners.
