Vol. 457 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tourism Marketing and Product Development.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

153 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the role if any, he envisages for local authorities in tourism marketing and product development; and his views on the suggested appointment of tourism development officers by county councils. [16552/95]

David Andrews

Ceist:

154 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the role if any, he envisages for local authorities in tourism marketing and product development; and his views on the suggested appointment of tourism development officers by county councils. [16553/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 153 and 154 together.

The Local Government Act, 1991, provides for each local authority to engage in such activities as it considers necessary or desirable. The local authorities have certain developed responsibilites which have been provided for under statute by the Minister for the Environment which includes discretionary powers to engage in tourism related activities. I would expect that the local authorities through their participation and representation on the boards of management and county committees of the regional tourism organisations, will continue to contribute to tourism in their localities and that any future plans that councils may have for supporting development of the sector will be considered in that context. I would also like to recognise the valuable contribution that the members of the county tourism committees make to the development of tourism in their respective counties.

155 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the role if any, he envisages for the regional authorities in the promotion of tourism and in support for product development. [16556/95]

David Andrews

Ceist:

156 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the role if any, he envisages for the regional authorities in the promotion of tourism and in support for product development. [16557/95]

I propose to take Questions No. 155 and 156 together.

Regional authorities were established by the Minister for the Environment primarily to promote co-ordination of the provision of public services in each region and to monitor and advise on the implementation of EU funds. While I have no direct responsibility for such authorities I would expect that in the performance of their functions, and particularly in improving co-ordination of public services, many of which are essential elements of tourism infrastructure, the new regional authorities have the potential to make a significant contribution to tourism development in Ireland.
