Vol. 459 No. 6

Written Answers. - Compulsory Carrier Stops.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

175 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if new carriers travelling between North America and Dublin are inhibited by the rule providing for a compulsory stop in one direction; and the proposals, if any, he has to remove this one way stop requirement. [18664/95]

There is no requirement for a compulsory stop in one direction on air services between Ireland and the US under the Ireland/US Air Services Agreement as amended in October, 1993. The agreement does however require that services to Dublin must be matched with equivalent services to Shannon in a 12 month period.

Under the Ireland/Canada Air Services Agreement, scheduled services may only operate to and from Shannon while charter services must operate via Shannon in one direction at least.

I have no plans at present to change the existing bilateral arrangements for air services between Ireland and the US and Canada.
