Vol. 459 No. 8

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Michael Smith

Ceist:

97 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for Education when she will provide remedial teaching services at Killea National School. Templemore, County Tipperary. [19091/95]

I am aware of the case made by the school in question for a remedial teaching service.

It was expected that following a review of remedial needs at primary level in the Templemore area, which took place in June 1995, the school in question would share the existing remedial service in Templemore. Unfortunately, it was not possible to reorganise this service to include Killea National School from September, 1995.

However, my Department is very anxious that a remedial service be provided to the pupils at this school and is actively pursuing this objective as part of a re-organisation of existing remedial services in the area.

Ceist:

98 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for Education when she will provide remedial teaching services at Loughmore, Castleimey, Templetuohy and Moyne National Schools. [19092/95]

I am not in a position at to make remedial teacher posts available to the schools mentioned by the Deputy.

Earlier this year, I allocated 55 remedial teacher posts to primary schools. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need following the recommendations from my Department's primary inspectorate. This allocation brings the total number of remedial teachers now in place in the primary sector to 1,188. Unfortunately, the schools mentioned by the Deputy were not successful on this occasion.
I am keeping the question of further appointments in this area under regular review as resources become available. The needs of the schools in question will be taken fully into account as part of this process.
