Vol. 459 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Allowances.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

11 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the dissatisfaction among gardaí in view of the discrimination in relation to the away-from-home allowance payable to those who serve in Cyprus as distinct from the allowances paid to other overseas postings. [17296/95]

I am aware that there is some dissatisfaction among gardaí serving on a United Nations mission in Cyprus about the rate of allowances payable to them. These allowances are currently the subject of discussions at the Conciliation Council, established under the Garda Conciliation and Arbitration Scheme. Under the provisions of the scheme, the proceedings of the council are confidential and, accordingly, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on the matter.

I appreciate the need for discretion. Does the Minister accept that the men serving in Cyprus are treated unfairly and will she guarantee they will receive sympathetic consideration?

I will bear the Deputy's comments in mind when I receive the conciliation council's report for signature.

That concludes questions for today.
