16 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the recommendation by the General Council of County Councils that county and city councils should be given charge of their local Garda forces; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18908/95]
I presume the Deputy is referring to a submission made by the General Council of County Councils to the Devolution Commission for local government reform which has been set up by the Government to oversee the process of local government renewal. Reports from the devolution commission will be considered and put to Government by a Cabinet committee chaired by the Taoiseach. I understand that no proposals for consideration have yet been presented to the Cabinet committee from the devolution commission and, in the circumstances, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this stage.
