Ceist:48 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice her views on the recent statement by the Garda Commissioner on the need to link reform of the bail laws to the provision of extra prison spaces; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16215/95]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 48 together.
I outlined in detail the position in relation to bail in my contribution to Private Members' Business on 27 September.
Consideration of the Law Reform Commission Report on Bail is continuing in my Department as a priority with a view to submitting effective and comprehensive proposals to Government on this matter as quickly as possible.
Obviously, in deciding on any changes in this area the Government will have full regard to any implications which such changes may have for prison accommodation.
