I am informed by the Garda authorities that the investigation of this type of crime is a matter, in the first instance, for gardaí at local level. However, where expert assistance is required, the Investigation Unit of the Garda Síochána is available to assist local gardaí. This unit is experienced in the investigation of such crimes and has extensive contacts with other agencies both here and abroad.
In addition, the Garda authorities are closely involved in the ongoing development of arrangements for co-operation, exchange of information and the sharing of intelligence between the law enforcement agencies of the member states of the European Union.
