Ceist:

316 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the total number of recognised secondary, vocational and community/comprehensive pupils on whole-time junior and senior cycle programmes on the grant scheme for school books for needy pupils 1995/1996; and the estimated number of pupils in need from families mainly dependent on social welfare payments, from families on low incomes and from families experiencing financial hardship due to particular circumstances. 317 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the number of schools operating a book loan scheme for pupils in need in secondary, vocational, community and comprehensive schools. [19208/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 316 and 317 together. A total of 155.559 pupils received financial assistance under the 1995/96 grant scheme for school books for needy pupils. A breakdown of this number by school category under each of the qualifying criteria are given in the following table:
