Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Commencement Orders.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

544 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the Acts and provisions of Acts under the auspices of his Department which, as of 1 January 1996, are not in force in view of the fact that a commencement order has not been made; whether it is proposed, to make such an order in each case; and, if so, when. [19415/96]

In the case of legislation for which I have responsibility the position is as follows: Diseases of Animals Act, 1966: section 18 has not yet been brought into force and there are no plans to make a commencement order to bring it into operation.

Abattoirs Act, 1988: the following parts of the Abattoirs Act, 1988, have not yet been commenced: Parts 1 and VII: all sections in so far as they apply to knackeries; Part III: all sections — this part applies to knackeries only. Legal requirements relating to knackeries are under examination by my Department; the relevant parts of the Act are expected to be commenced later this year when that examination is completed.
