Vol. 460 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Exhibition Centre.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

26 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on the need to establish a national exhibition centre following the success of Show Case, 1996, where a sample of each Irish craft product would be permanently on display; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1475/96]

As the Deputy is aware, Showcase Dublin is an annual exhibition organised by the Crafts Council of Ireland to promote the sale of quality Irish crafts. It is held in the RDS over a number of days, and I understand that it has been very successful in that venue. The council is, of course, part-funded by my Department, through the Forbairt budget.

I would like to point out that the Crafts Council already has its own permanent exhibitions gallery located in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. Every variety of craftwork is on display in this centre. At different times, certain craft types are selected for particular focus.
Following an overall review of the organisational arrangements for the Crafts Council, and indeed the putting in place of new management, consideration is being given to all relevant operational aspects.
