Vol. 460 No. 7

Written Answers - Diesel Excise Charges.

M. J. Nolan

Ceist:

65 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for Finance the current excise charge on diesel fuels; and if he will make a statement on his proposals to promote a biodiesel industry in Ireland. [2080/96]

The current post budget excise duty rates applicable to diesel fuels are:

Rate per 1,000 litres

£

Auto-diesel

243.75

Marked gas oil (e.g. home heating oil)

37.30

Diesel used in licensed road passenger services

17.90

All or a proportion of the duty is repaid to persons under the disabled drivers scheme, sea fishermen, glasshouse operators and mushroom growers.
The Finance Act, 1995 provides for the Minister for Finance, in consulatation with the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, to relieve excise duty on pilot projects undertaken in the State which relate to the technical viability of the manufacture, production or use of biofuel in the State.
No applications for relief have been received.
