Vol. 460 No. 7

Written Answers - Dublin Sewage Treatment Works.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

73 Mr. D. McDowell asked the Minister for the Environment when he expects a decision in relation to the proposed sewage treatment works at Ringsend, Dublin 4; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2078/96]

EU and national environmental standards require upgraded waste-water treatment for Dublin and other major sewage discharges by the end of the year 2000. Dublin Corporation has been planning the necessary works for its area.

Following completion of the preliminary report for the provision of treatment facilities, the corporation carried out a market testing exercise in 1995 to assess the cost implications of different implementation scenarios. This indicated that the most cost-effective method of implementation would be to seek tenders for construction on a Design and Build (DB) basis. My Department approved in November 1995 the preparation of the necessary contract documents and awaits submission of these by the corporation.

Approval also issued to Dublin Corporation in November 1995 to have detailed proposals developed on a DB basis for management of sewage sludge at Ringsend so as to allow marine dumping of this waste to be terminated by 1998.
Both proposals will require the preparation of environmental impact statements.
