Vol. 460 No. 8

Written Answers. - FCA Anniversary.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

7 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider issuing a commemorative medal to serving members of the FCA with a minimum of seven years service and to people who have retired with full service to mark the 50 anniversary of the founding of that organisation. [17947/95]

The 50th anniversary of the formation of the FCA is on 6 February 1996.

The issue of a commemorative medal to mark the occasion has been considered in detail. However, I understand that no official medal was issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Defence Forces or any anniversary of the Army, Naval Service or Air Corps and, therefore, it is not intended to issue an official medal to mark the 50th anniversary of the FCA.

A list of events has been drawn up by the military authorities to commemorate the anniversary in 1996 and are as follows: (a) The holding of regional parades to include the presentation of service medals and religious services. (b) The printing of a special dedicated edition ofAn Cosantoir. (c) The holding of an all-Army FCA shooting competition on 25-26 May at the Curragh. (d) The holding of archival, photographic and equipment displays, also on 25-26 May at the Curragh. (e) The issue of an FCA dedicated Call Card by Telecom Éireann in May.
