55 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the current total number of prison places available for use; the total number of personnel involved in the prison services; and if she will give a breakdown of the personnel. [2192/96]
The total number of places available in the prison system at present is 2,174. The total number of personnel involved in the prison services is 2,484 broken down as follows: Management (Governor grades), 41; Supervisory Staff, 198; Work/Training Staff, 75; Trades Staff, 118; Clerical Staff, 99; Prison Officers (basic grade), 1,921; Medical Officers, 11; Psychologists, 6; Chaplains, 10; Staff Cooks, 9; Pharmacist, 1.
As the prisons and places of detention operate around the clock, 365 days per year, the figures indicated above do not represent the number of staff on duty at any one time.
