Vol. 461 No. 4

Written Answers. - MMDS Television Service.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

216 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the action, if any, he proposes to take in regard to MMDS in County Donegal. [3183/96]

The Deputy's question does not disclose any grounds on which action might be called for.

I can say that in 1992, my Department issued a licence to a company to provide an MMDS (Multi-Point Microwave Distribution System) television service in County Donegal and part of County Sligo. MMDS was designed to provide high quality, reliable multichannel television services to those parts of the country, like County Donegal, where licensed cable television is not available. The provision of the service on the ground is a matter for the licensee, however, and I have no function in day-to-day operations.
