Vol. 461 No. 5

Written Answers. - Batteries Directive Provision.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

101 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment the provision which his Department and local authorities make or will be making to meet the requirement for collection facilities in the batteries directive. [3368/96]

My Department has been in discussion with manufacturers and distributors of those battery types specified by the directive with a view to advising practical arrangements for collection of spent batteries. In response, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry has brought forward proposals for the collection by the motor trade of used automotive batteries. The development and operation of these and other suitable producer responsibility arrangements will be promoted by my Department and local authorities. The Waste Management Bill, 1995, when enacted, will provide statutory support for the implementation of the batteries directive.
