Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Open Prisons Security.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

37 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Justice if she will carry out a review of security at open prisons such as Loughan House in view of the real security concerns of local residents as discussed with officials of her Department recently; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3914/96]

Security at all institutions, including Loughan House, is kept under constant review. I am aware of the views expressed by residents in the vicinity of Loughan House and I can assure the Deputy that their particular concerns are being examined by my Department in consultation with the management of the institution. The meeting referred to by the Deputy involved the prison governor and two senior officials from my Department who deal with prisons. They met locally for several hours on 26 January with a representative gathering of residents from the vicinity of Loughan House to clarify the issues involved. Some Members of this House, from different parties, who represent the area also attended the meeting. It is the intention to maintain a high level of contact with local residents in this respect and the liaison person on my Department's side will be the governor who himself lives adjacent to the prison.
