39 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the total cost of the recent initiatives regarding swimming lessons on a weekly basis for female prisoners in Mountjoy Prison; the number of prisoners availing of this facility; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3794/96]
The total weekly cost involved is £12.66 including the hire of the pool and the necessary pool attendant supervision. Up to six female prisoners take part each week. No extra prison staff costs are incurred because prison staff rostered for duty at the prison travel with the prisoners to and from the pool. No overtime or subsistence costs are incurred in this connection. Prison transport is used but the fuel costs incurred are negligible as the pool is a very short distance from the prison.
