Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Mayo Water Scheme.

Séamus Hughes

Ceist:

93 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment the current position in relation to the owenduff/Tonragee water scheme, County Mayo; if early approval will be given in view of the fact that the current supply has been condemned by the medical health officer; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3957/96]

Work is currently under way on augmenting the Achill regional water supply scheme at a cost of £1.9 million. Mayo County Council have proposed a number of further phases of the scheme, including an extension to Owenduff-Tonragee. Having regard to the existing level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to approve these further phases. It is a matter for the county council to respond appropriately to any substantiated deficiency in private drinking water quality in accordance with the procedure established by the European Communities (Quality of Water intended for Human Consumption) Regulations, 1989.
