Vol. 462 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fast Food Industry.

Brendan Kenneally

Ceist:

15 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, in view of his recent support on expansion in the fast food industry, if he has satisfied himself with the fast food industry; that young people employed in the industry are getting a fair rate of pay; that operators within the industry are complying with the various labour regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4139/96]

Rates of pay and other conditions of employment of certain workers employed in catering estabishments anywhere throughout the State except the County Borough of Dublin and the Borough of Dún Laoghaire are prescribed in an Employment Regulation Order (ERO) made by the Labour Court on the basis of proposals from the Catering Joint Labour Committee.

Routine inspections are carried out by inspectors of my Department to ensure that the terms of the ERO are being observed by employers. Appropriate action is taken in cases where breaches are discovered.

A JLC for catering establishments in the County Borough of Dublin and the Borough of Dún Laoghaire, which do not come within the scope of the existing ERO, has also now been established. The JLC is still in discussions in relation to the rates of pay and other conditions of employment of the workers in respect of whom it operates.
