Vol. 462 No. 4

Written Answers. - Set Aside Payments.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

100 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry further to his reply to a parliamentary question on set aside payments to Irish farmers, the location of the land involved; the names of the recipients of the top ten payments; the total moneys paid out under the set aside scheme in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4719/96]

Of the ten applicants referred to in my reply of 23 January, five were located in County Meath, two in County Wexford and one each in counties Louth, Dublin and Kilkenny. These payments represented subsidies due under the EU scheme for compensatory payments for arable crops and were not mainly payments for the set-aside of arable land.

The total amount paid out under the 1995 EU scheme for compensatory payments for arable crops was just over £82 million, of which £11.5 million was paid in respect of set-aside land.

The top ten payments in 1995 totalled just over £1,675,000, of which less than £320,000 was paid in respect of set-aside land.

As the Deputy will be aware, it is not the normal practice when replying to parliamentary questions to disclose the names of private individuals.
