Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation.

John Ellis

Ceist:

215 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the position in the case of a person in County Leitrim who sought to tax his motor vehicle with the Taxation Office but was refused in view of the fact that he held insurance with an English company (details supplied) which operates in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4888/96]

I understand that the insurance certificate produced by the person concerned to the motor taxation office was obtained in the jurisdiction of the UK from an insurer which does not and has not applied to operate in this State. As such, the insurance could not be valid in Ireland. The particular requirements of compliance with the Road Traffic Acts for the purpose of motor vehicle taxation are matters falling within the province of my colleague, the Minister for the Environment.
