268 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education whether she has received an application for a remedial teacher from schools (details supplied) in County Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6567/96]

Michael Creed

Ceist:

270 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education the number of additional remedial teachers appointed by her since 1993; and the number of additional remedial teachers which she intends to appoint in 1996. [6569/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 266, 267, 268 and 270 together.

There are approximately 509,000 pupils attending primary schools at present. Approximately 444,000 of these have access to a remedial service. The remaining 65,000 primary school pupils do not have access to a remedial teaching service.

I have appointed a total of 241 additional remedial teachers at primary level and a further 98 remedial teachers at second-level since January 1993.

I am not in a position at present to make remedial teacher posts available to primary schools. When I am in a position to extend the remediation service, all schools, including the schools referred to by the Deputies, will receive every consideration.
