Vol. 463 No. 3

Written Answers. - Updating of Fingerprinting Facilities.

Willie O'Dea

Ceist:

279 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Justice the amount spent on the updating of fingerprinting facilities in prisons in the past two years; the type of system now used; and the prisons in which this system has been installed. [6010/96]

Fingerprints are currently taken manually in accordance with the regulations as to the Measuring and Photographing of Prisoners, 1955 (S.I. No. 114 of 1955). The amount spent on these manual systems in 1994 and 1995 was about £900.

An extension of the new Garda electronic system of Automated Fingerprint Identification/Recognition (AFIS/AFR) has recently been installed in Mountjoy. The equipment cost of this "livescan" facility at Mountjoy was £56,574 and the cost of the related building/electrical works amounted to £10,797.
