Ceist:

303 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the timescale for the ultimate release of a person (details supplied) from Arbour Hill Prison, Dublin 8, indicating whether or not his continuing medical difficulties will lead to an early release; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6585/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos.283 and No. 303 together.

The prisoner to which the Deputy refers is currently serving a 16 year sentence for rape in Arbour Hill prison. Allowing for normal remission he will be due for release on 10 December 2000.

I am aware that the Deputy raised the matter of this prisoner's health with my predecessor. I am satisfied that appropriate medical treatment is available to the prisoner and am assured that his medical needs are being adequately addressed.

The prisoner has not received any temporary releases to date and I am not prepared to authorise any form of temporary release for him at this stage of his sentence. His case was recently reviewed by the Sentence Review Group and they made no recommendations in this regard which would encourage me to alter this view.
