Vol. 463 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Consultancy Costs.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

315 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Social Welfare the overall cost of private consultancies engaged by his Department in each of the years since 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6434/96]

I presume the Deputy is referring to consultancy assistance obtained from private sector firms. As part of its ongoing business, my Department regularly engages consultancy assistance for various purposes including the provision of expert technical advice of a specialised nature, to supplement existing resources during peak periods of activity and to provide strategic advice.

Most consultancies are engaged to assist in the development of computer systems aimed at modernising service delivery and to provide analysis of specific organisational issues. In addition consultancy assistance is obtained for policy and other research purposes.

The following are details of expenditure on use of consultancy from companies in the private sector in respect of each of the years from 1987 to date.
