Vol. 465 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tourism Promotion.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

31 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the steps, if any, being taken to promote tourism in Ireland during its forthcoming Presidency of the European Union; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10269/96]

In terms of delegates, it is estimated that up to 8,000 delegates will visit Ireland during our EU Presidency. Over 100 meetings will be held in various parts of Ireland, including a European Council, seven informal Ministerial Councils and a number of other meetings involving overseas Ministers.

It is estimated that up to 2,500 journalists could be in Dublin for the European Council and there will be significant overseas media representation at the other ministerial meetings.

Bord Fáilte is working actively with all the main Departments hosting meetings to ensure that the tourism information needs of visitors, in terms of literature, accommodation and itineraries, will be met. Bord Fáilte's overseas offices also provide dossiers with comprehensive information on Ireland as a tourist destination to journalists and EU Government Departments planning visits.

However, perhaps more importantly, the quality of the experience which our visitors enjoy while in Ireland, through interaction with our people or through enjoyment of our unspoiled natural and cultural environment, will serve to promote Ireland. I hope that many of those who will come to Ireland in a working capacity will be encouraged to return for a holiday and will promote holidays in Ireland by word of mouth recommendation to their friends and colleagues.
