69 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Health the pay scales for speech and language therapists; the number of males and females working in the profession; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11790/96]

70 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Health whether speech and language therapists have completed a four year honours degree course; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11795/96]

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 69 and 70 together. Speech and language therapists' pay scales from 1 June 1996 are as follows:

Basic Grade

£15,840-£20,061

Senior Grade

£18,173-£21,845

Principal II

£20,385-£23,351

Principal I

£21,511-£24,966

There are two male and approximately 236 female speech and language therapists employed in the public health service according to the most recent available statistics (1994).
A four-year bachelor of science in clinical speech and language studies awarded by Trinity College, Dublin is the required qualification for entry into the profession.
