Vol. 466 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dromod (Leitrim) Meat Plant.

Declan Bree

Ceist:

136 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the fact that in spite of an offer of FEOGA grant aid, the management of Western Meat Producers Limited is in the process of closing down its plant in Dromod, County Leitrim, with the consequent loss of 85 jobs; if his attention has further been drawn to the high level of unemployment existing in this area; the action, if any, that will be taken to encourage the management of Western Meat Producers Limited to reopen the plant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12182/96]

I refer the Deputy to the reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 93 to 98, inclusive, on 30 May 1996. The position in relation to the future operation of the plant remains unchanged. It is a matter for management at the Dromod plant to carry out remedial work to rectify the deficiencies which have been identified. The recommencement of operations at the plant depends on such work being undertaken.
