Vol. 466 No. 6

Written Answers. - Law Reform.

Dan Wallace

Ceist:

19 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the five aspects of law reform which he considers most urgent at this time; and the main impediments which are delaying their early implementation. [12069/96]

In so far as my Department is concerned, Bills, five in number, promised as a matter of priority are the following: the Family Law (Divorce) Bill; the Employment Equality Bill; the Equal Status Bill; the Children Bill; the Family Law (Nullity) Bill.

Publication of the divorce Bill is awaiting the outcome of the appeal before the Supreme Court of the High Court's judgment in the Hanafin case. The other four Bills are being progressed as quickly as possible commensurate with the need for due care and attention to detail on the complex social and legal issues involved, the need for consultations with relevant groups and with Government Departments and the Attorney General's Office prior to seeking Government approval for their publication.
