Vol. 466 No. 8

Written Answers. - Special Assistance for Dublin Communities.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

23 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to provide special assistance to the communities in Dublin west, namely Cherry Orchard, and other areas to assist in the development of these areas which lack most, if not all, essential community facilities and suffer unacceptable degrees of deprivation. [7968/96]

There are no funds available to me to provide special assistance of the kind referred to in particular areas; such assistance is more appropriate for consideration in the context of the local development programme.

Under Sub-Programme 2 of the Operational Programme for Local Urban and Rural Development, which is the responsibility of the Department of the Taoiseach, funding is being provided towards the integrated development of designated disadvantaged areas. I understand that the Ballyfermot area is among those to be assisted under the programme and a partnership company has been established to implement an action plan for the area. Funding of £2.4 million is to be provided to the Ballyfermot Partnership over the period to 1999.
