Vol. 467 No. 1
279 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of applications he refused in respect of the student summer jobs scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12923/96]
The students' summer jobs scheme provides income support for the less well-off third level students who have been debarred from qualifying for unemployment assistance during the summer months since 1993 by virtue of the provisions of section 126 of the Social Welfare (Consolidation) Act, 1993. A total of 23,884 students applications have been received to date. Of those 5,583 have been refused mainly on the grounds that they have completed a course of study and are thus eligible to claim unemployment assistance during the summer if they cannot obtain employment.
