Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Neutrality Policy.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

88 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on whether Ireland is a neutral country; that shows of military strength are in contradiction to the rules of neutrality, as they could be seen as acts of aggression and a threat to other nations; his views on whether the J F Kennedy aircraft carrier which is to visit Dublin on 4 July 1996, which intends to display its militaristic attributes to the public, the world and our children, constitutes a breach in our neutral standing which would greatly lessen the world reputation Ireland has as a country with a role in international peace keeping. [12779/96]

Next month's visit of the USS John F. Kennedy is a goodwill visit reflecting the enduring close relations between Ireland and the United States and our peoples. The visit has no implications for our policy of military neutrality or for Ireland's reputation or role in international peacekeeping.
